What This Code Covers

D7311 covers alveoloplasty (ridge bone reshaping) performed in conjunction with the extraction of one to three teeth in a single quadrant. This is the limited version of D7310, used when fewer teeth are extracted but the ridge still requires surgical recontouring for prosthetic purposes or to remove sharp bone edges.

Billing Guide

Bill this code when:

• Alveoloplasty is performed at the time of extraction of one to three teeth in one quadrant
• The bone ridge requires recontouring beyond routine extraction socket management
• Significant sharp edges, bony spicules, or undercuts need surgical correction
• The recontouring is in the same quadrant as the extractions

Do not bill this code when:

• Four or more teeth are extracted in the quadrant. Use D7310
• The alveoloplasty is on a healed ridge without extractions. Use D7321
• Routine socket management is sufficient without additional bone work
• The bone smoothing is minimal and included in the extraction code

Insurance and Denial Prevention

Key Payer Rules:

• D7311 is billed per quadrant for one to three extraction sites
• The same coverage rules as D7310 apply
• Documentation of significant bone work beyond routine extraction is needed
• Some payers bundle alveoloplasty with surgical extractions

Common Denials and How to Respond:

• Bundled with extraction - Document that the bone recontouring was a distinct, significant procedure beyond normal extraction socket care.
• Should be D7310 - Verify the tooth count. D7311 is correct for one to three teeth; D7310 is for four or more.
