Gingivoplasty
Dental RCM Glossary
A surgical reshaping of healthy gum tissue around teeth for cosmetic or functional purposes.
Gingivoplasty is a soft tissue procedure that reshapes the gumline to improve its appearance or function. Unlike a gingivectomy, which removes diseased tissue, gingivoplasty specifically focuses on recontouring healthy gums. It is often performed for cosmetic reasons, particularly when a patient feels their smile shows too much gum tissue.
The procedure is typically done with a scalpel, laser, or electrosurgery unit under local anesthesia. The periodontist or general dentist carefully trims and sculpts the gum tissue to create a more even, symmetrical gumline. Laser-assisted gingivoplasty has become increasingly popular because it causes less bleeding, reduces healing time, and often results in less post-operative discomfort. Recovery is usually quick. Patients may experience some tenderness and swelling for a few days, but most can return to normal activities within a week. The dentist will provide instructions for gentle brushing around the treated area and may recommend a chlorhexidine rinse to keep the site clean during healing.
Gingivoplasty is frequently combined with other cosmetic procedures like veneers or crown lengthening to achieve a complete smile transformation. For practices looking to grow their elective services, it is a relatively straightforward procedure with high patient satisfaction. Proper case presentation, including before-and-after photos from previous patients, can help patients visualize the results and feel confident moving forward.
Why It Matters for Dental Practices
Gingivoplasty cases represent an elective revenue stream for practices. Understanding the procedure helps front office teams discuss it confidently with patients asking about smile makeovers.
Example
A patient is unhappy with their 'gummy smile' and consults with the dentist. The treatment plan includes gingivoplasty on the upper anterior teeth to remove excess gum tissue and reveal more tooth structure, creating a more balanced smile.
