D8040 covers limited orthodontic treatment for an adult patient with permanent dentition. Treatment targets a specific orthodontic problem such as pre-prosthetic tooth movement (aligning teeth before a bridge or implant), minor relapse correction from previous orthodontic treatment, or correction of a specific tooth position. This is not comprehensive full-arch treatment.

Billing Guide

Bill this code when:

• Limited orthodontic treatment is provided to an adult patient
• Treatment addresses a defined, specific problem
• The treatment is shorter and more focused than comprehensive orthodontics
• Common indications: pre-prosthetic alignment, relapse correction, single-arch treatment

Do not bill this code when:

• Comprehensive adult orthodontic treatment is provided. Use D8090
• The patient is an adolescent. Use D8030
• The patient has mixed dentition. Use D8020
• Only a retainer is provided
