Filling

Dental RCM Glossary

A dental restoration used to repair a tooth damaged by decay. Common materials include composite resin (tooth-colored) and amalgam (silver-colored).

A filling is one of the most common dental restorations. When a tooth develops a cavity, the decayed portion is removed and the resulting hole is filled with a restorative material to bring the tooth back to its normal shape and function. The two most widely used filling materials are composite resin (tooth-colored) and amalgam (silver-colored), though other options like glass ionomer and gold exist.

Composite resin fillings have become the standard in most practices because they blend in with natural tooth color and bond directly to the tooth structure, which can help strengthen what remains. Amalgam fillings, while less popular than they once were, are still used in some situations, particularly for large restorations on back teeth where durability under heavy chewing forces is a priority. Each material has its strengths, and the best choice depends on the location, size of the cavity, and patient preference.

For dental practices, fillings represent a core service and a consistent source of production. Proper documentation of the surfaces involved (mesial, occlusal, distal, etc.) is essential for correct CDT coding and insurance reimbursement. It is also worth having a clear conversation with patients about the expected lifespan of a filling, since no restoration lasts forever. Setting realistic expectations upfront builds trust and reduces frustration when a filling eventually needs to be replaced.

Why It Matters for Dental Practices

Fillings are the bread and butter of restorative dentistry. Material choice, proper coding, and patient education about longevity all affect patient satisfaction and practice revenue.

Example

A patient has a small cavity on a back molar. The dentist recommends a composite filling for a natural appearance. The patient asks about the difference between composite and amalgam options.
