Gap

Dental RCM Glossary

A space between teeth, also called a diastema. Gaps can occur naturally or result from tooth loss, habits, or orthodontic conditions.

A gap between teeth, known clinically as a diastema, is a space where two teeth do not touch. The most well-known example is a gap between the two upper front teeth (central incisors), but gaps can occur between any teeth in the mouth. Some people embrace their gap as a distinctive feature, while others seek treatment to close it.

Gaps can develop for several reasons. Sometimes it is simply a size mismatch, where the teeth are too small relative to the jaw. A large or low-attaching labial frenum (the tissue connecting the lip to the gum) can push the front teeth apart. Habits like thumb sucking or tongue thrusting can create gaps over time. Periodontal disease can cause teeth to drift and spaces to open up. And, of course, tooth loss leaves obvious gaps.

For dental practices, patients who are bothered by gaps are often motivated to pursue treatment, making it an opportunity for case acceptance. The treatment approach depends on the cause and size of the gap. Small gaps between front teeth can often be closed with composite bonding in a single visit, which is a conservative and affordable option. Porcelain veneers offer a more durable and esthetic result. Orthodontic treatment (braces or clear aligners) addresses the underlying alignment issue. For gaps caused by tooth loss, bridges, implants, or partial dentures may be appropriate. The key is understanding what is causing the gap and matching the treatment to the patient's goals and budget.

Why It Matters for Dental Practices

Gaps between teeth are a common cosmetic concern that drives patients to seek treatment. Understanding the causes helps in recommending the right solution, from bonding to orthodontics.

Example

A patient is self-conscious about a gap between their upper front teeth. The dentist discusses options including composite bonding, porcelain veneers, and orthodontic treatment to close the space.
