Incisors

Dental RCM Glossary

The four front teeth in the upper and lower jaws. Designed for cutting and biting food. Central and lateral incisors.

Incisors are the eight teeth at the very front of the mouth, four on top and four on the bottom. They are divided into central incisors (the two middle teeth) and lateral incisors (the teeth on either side of the centrals). Their flat, chisel-shaped edges are designed for cutting and biting into food, and they play a major role in speech, particularly sounds like "th," "f," and "v."

Beyond their functional role, incisors are the teeth that define a person's smile. They are the first teeth visible when someone talks, laughs, or smiles, which is why damage, staining, gaps, or misalignment of incisors tends to bother patients more than similar issues with back teeth. Cosmetic treatments like bonding, veneers, and whitening most often focus on the incisors for this reason. In children, the primary (baby) incisors are usually the first teeth to erupt, appearing around six months of age. The permanent central incisors come in around age six to seven, and the lateral incisors follow around age seven to eight. Monitoring the eruption pattern of incisors is an important part of pediatric dental care, since delays or abnormal positioning can signal crowding or other orthodontic concerns.

For your practice, incisor-related complaints are often urgent in the patient's eyes, even when they are not clinically urgent. A chipped or darkened front tooth can cause significant emotional distress. Having protocols for same-day cosmetic repairs and clear communication about treatment options helps you serve these patients quickly and build loyalty.

Why It Matters for Dental Practices

Incisors are the most visible teeth in the smile and the most common focus of cosmetic dentistry conversations. Damage or discoloration of incisors often drives patients to seek treatment.

Example

A patient chips their upper central incisor in a fall. Because it is a front tooth that is immediately visible, the patient requests same-day repair. The dentist uses composite bonding to restore the natural shape and color.
