Laminate Veneer
Dental RCM Glossary
A thin shell of porcelain or composite bonded to the front surface of a tooth to improve appearance. Also simply called a veneer.
A laminate veneer is a thin, custom-made shell designed to cover the front surface of a tooth, transforming its color, shape, size, or length. Made from porcelain or composite resin, veneers are one of the most popular cosmetic dental treatments because they deliver dramatic results with relatively conservative tooth preparation compared to full crowns.
Porcelain veneers are the gold standard. They are fabricated in a dental lab from high-quality ceramic, offering exceptional aesthetics and stain resistance. The process typically takes two visits. At the first appointment, the dentist removes a thin layer of enamel from the front of the tooth (usually about 0.5mm), takes an impression, and places temporary veneers. At the second appointment, the permanent veneers are bonded to the teeth with a strong adhesive. Composite veneers, applied directly to the tooth in a single visit, are a more affordable option but tend to be less durable and more prone to staining over time. Veneers can address a wide range of cosmetic concerns, including discoloration that does not respond to whitening, chips and cracks, minor gaps between teeth, and teeth that appear slightly misaligned. However, they are not the right solution for every patient. Significant crowding, heavy grinding habits, or severely damaged teeth may require orthodontics, nightguards, or crowns instead. A thorough evaluation and honest conversation about expectations are essential for good outcomes.
For your practice, veneers represent one of the highest-value elective services you can offer. Building a portfolio of before-and-after cases, training your team on how to discuss cosmetic options naturally during routine visits, and offering financing can significantly increase veneer case acceptance. Patients who invest in veneers tend to become long-term, highly engaged patients who value their dental care.
Why It Matters for Dental Practices
Veneers are a flagship cosmetic service that can transform a practice's revenue mix. Strong case presentation and before-and-after portfolios drive patient interest and acceptance.
Example
A patient wants to correct the appearance of slightly crooked, stained upper front teeth without orthodontics. The dentist prepares the six upper anterior teeth and places porcelain laminate veneers, giving the patient a straighter, whiter, and more uniform smile in just two visits.
